NASA Mars Water Discovery: According to reports dated April 19, 2025, NASA has confirmed the discovery of water on the planet Mars. This water is soon expected to be brought back to Earth as a sample for further research. The discovery has been made possible through various missions, including Lunar Prospector, Mariner 9, Viking Lander, Mars Exploration Rover, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Phoenix Lander, Mars Odyssey, and the InSight Lander. These missions have collectively contributed to locating, collecting, and analyzing water samples from Mars. The sample currently being returned to Earth could be instrumental in understanding the potential for life and the planet’s history or future.

When and Where Was It Discovered?

According to sources, water on Mars has not been found in a single location but in various forms across different regions. In addition to water, the discovery included the presence of a carbon dioxide (CO₂) atmosphere, which could offer valuable insights into Mars’ past and its potential to support life. Water has been detected in the form of vapor, subsurface water, and deep-soil moisture. Discoveries have been made across decades, from the 19th to the 21st century. The first significant evidence of water vapor was observed in 1971 by the Mariner 9 mission, while ice patches were more recently found in 2024.

How Did the NASA Mars Water Discovery Happen?

Water on Mars was discovered through decades of exploration and data collection from multiple spacecraft. The Viking missions (1976) observed dry riverbeds, suggesting past liquid water. In 2001, the Mars Odyssey orbiter detected ice beneath the Martian surface, which the Phoenix Lander confirmed in 2008. The Curiosity rover (2012) found evidence of ancient lakes and streambeds. In 2015, dark streaks on Martian slopes hinted at seasonal salty water flows. One of the most groundbreaking discoveries came in 2018, when radar data from the Mars Express orbiter suggested the presence of a lake of liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap.

What Type of Water Was Found on Mars?

The water found on Mars exists primarily in the form of water ice (H₂O ice), which is relatively rare and precious in the Martian environment. Other forms include surface ice, ice patches, glaciers, and water vapor. While liquid water on the surface is currently unlikely due to the planet’s thin atmosphere and extreme temperatures, subsurface water remains a focus of study.

On April 14, 2025, Blue Origin launched its NS-31 mission, marking a historic milestone with the first all-female crew since 1963. The flight used the reusable New Shepard suborbital rocket, which took the crew beyond the Kármán line—62 miles (100 km) above Earth, the internationally recognized boundary of space. During the 11-minute journey, the crew experienced weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth. This was the 31st New Shepard flight and the 11th with a human crew. Designed for space tourism, New Shepard offers short trips to space, with refundable deposits around $150,000; auctioned seats have sold for millions. Blue Origin also invites special guests on board.

In January 2025, Blue Origin also successfully launched its New Glenn rocket—a massive, reusable rocket standing 320 feet tall and capable of carrying up to 45 metric tons to low Earth orbit. Aimed to fly at least 25 times per booster, it positions Blue Origin as a strong competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon 9. New Glenn will also support Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which aims to provide global internet service, competing with SpaceX’s Starlink. These developments highlight Blue Origin’s dual focus on space tourism and orbital missions.

Who all are involved in this project?

This mission marked the 11th crewed flight for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program, which focused on space tourism. It was a historic mission as it featured an all-female crew after 1963. It consists of six members such as Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyễn, Gayle King, Katy Perry, Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sánchez.

SpaceX Dragon Departs ISS, Embarks on Earthward Journey

The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, carrying Sunita Williams Crew-9 Return, Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Aleksandr Gorbunov, has smoothly undocked from the ISS, kicking off its 17-hour trek back to Earth. The autonomous separation took place at 10:35 a.m. IST on March 18, as the Dragon detached from the Harmony module’s forward port and began drifting away with precise thruster maneuvers. Next, the spacecraft will tweak its path, run essential system diagnostics, and gear up for the deorbit burn slated for early Wednesday. Upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule will face extreme temperatures before parachutes deploy, ensuring a gentle splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean at 3:27 a.m. IST on March 19. This event underscores NASA’s Commercial Crew Program’s success in bringing astronauts home safely with reusable spacecraft. Keep checking Moneycontrol.com for live mission updates.

Sunita Williams Crew-9 Return 17-Hour Voyage from Space to Earth

The trip from the ISS to Earth isn’t a quick hop—it’s a meticulously planned 17-hour descent packed with technical precision and safety measures. Unlike typical air travel, this journey includes stages like undocking, a controlled drop, atmospheric re-entry, parachute release, and an ocean splashdown. The SpaceX Dragon will handle these phases on its own, delivering a seamless return for the astronauts after months in zero gravity. For Sunita Williams, Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Aleksandr Gorbunov, this marks the end of a challenging yet fulfilling stint on the ISS.

Why Sunita Williams Crew-9 Return Stands Out

Sunita Williams Crew-9 Return’ homecoming with NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission adds another chapter to her stellar career. As one of the most accomplished astronauts of Indian descent, she’s logged over 321 days in space across various missions. This return is noteworthy because it deviated from the original script—Williams was meant to travel back on Boeing’s Starliner, but technical glitches prompted NASA to send it back empty in August 2024. This curveball extended her stay, landing her a spot on Crew-9 and cementing this journey as a historic one.

These teachers will aim to educate students through vocational skills and practical experiences. This initiative is expected to aid in the academic and personal development of the students.

    Yogi govt

Under the leadership of Minister of State for Basic Education (Independent Charge) Sandeep Singh, the Basic Education Department conducts this four-day residential training, where teachers are trained in various disciplines.

The objective behind the initiative is to develop these schools into skill centres as per the guidelines of the National Education Policy 2020. The program aims to help students understand complex subjects like science and mathematics and familiarize them with vocational skills.

Promoting the holistic development of students is also a key goal. The aim of this initiative is not just to shape them as academicians, but to provide them with opportunities to develop their practical life skills as well.

In 2022, the pilot project of this program was implemented in 60 schools across 15 districts in which students learned skills in more than 60 activities through four major trades (Engineering and Workshop, Energy and Environment, Agriculture, Nursery and Gardening and Home and Health Care). This effort resulted in a significant increase in students’ practical understanding and interest in these subjects.

Minister of State for Basic Education (Independent Charge) Sandeep Singh stated that the implementation of this pilot project has not only led to an increase in student attendance in schools, but also brought about a remarkable improvement in their learning levels in science and mathematics.

“As students acquired vocational and technical skills, they developed a deeper understanding of the subjects, which is now contributing positively to their academic and personal growth”, he further added.

Inaugurating the training program, ACS Transport L. Venkateshwarlu and special guest Ms. Ekta Singh (IAS) stated that this initiative will prove to be a significant milestone in the skill development of students.

According to them, it will not only foster scientific thinking and technical skills among students but also empower them with the vocational abilities necessary for future self-reliance.

This effort to introduce practical education in schools will give a new direction to the state’s education system and help provide students with better employment opportunities, they pointed out.
