Here’s everything you need to know about this much-awaited film.
The Hype Around Coolie
The announcement of Rajinikanth movie Coolie in September 2023, initially under the tentative title Thalaivar 171 (marking Rajinikanth’s 171st film as a lead actor), sent fans into a frenzy. The collaboration between Rajinikanth, a cultural icon whose larger-than-life persona has defined Tamil cinema for decades, and Lokesh Kanagaraj, the mastermind behind gritty, universe-building blockbusters like Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo, is being hailed as one of Kollywood’s biggest crossovers. The title Coolie, revealed on April 22, 2024, further amplified the excitement, evoking memories of Rajinikanth’s iconic roles as a working-class hero in films like Mullum Malarum (1978), Mannan (1992), and Uzhaippali (1993).
The film’s teaser, released alongside the title, was a masterclass in building hype. Featuring Rajinikanth in a worker’s uniform, striding through a gold-smelting factory with his signature swagger, the teaser included nostalgic easter eggs from his filmography, such as him whistling the tune of “Shenbagame” from Enga Ooru Pattukaran (1987) and delivering a dialogue inspired by Ninaithale Inikkum (1979). The cigarette flip, a quintessential Rajinikanth move, had fans screaming, setting the stage for what promises to be a mass-entertainer with emotional depth.
Plot and Themes: A Tale of Vengeance and Redemption
Rajinikanth movie Coolie is a standalone story, distinct from Lokesh Kanagaraj’s celebrated Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), and focuses on the gritty world of gold smuggling set in Chennai’s shipping ports. Rajinikanth plays Deva, a former gold smuggler who returns after 30 years to rescue his friend (played by Sathyaraj) from a deadly villain named Simon, played by Nagarjuna Akkineni.
The trailer, unveiled on August 2, 2025, at a star-studded event at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, hints at a dual-timeline narrative, showcasing a retro Rajinikanth alongside his modern-day persona. The story weaves themes of betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption, with Rajinikanth’s character driven by a relentless quest for vengeance rooted in his tumultuous past.
Fan theories suggest Deva might be a former gangster turned coolie, hiding a dark past, possibly involving a tragic incident that fuels his obsession with revenge. Some speculate a connection to his old syndicate, now ruled by Simon, with supporting characters like Upendra and Soubin Shahir playing pivotal roles in the crime nexus. The trailer’s slick action sequences, explosive stunts, and violent clashes promise a high-octane experience, while the emotional undercurrent hints at Lokesh’s signature storytelling style—blending mass appeal with narrative depth.
